Tallinn (46 images)
After leaving the Port of Copenhagen and one day at sea Tallinn, Estonia was our first port of call. Tallinn the capital of Estonia has changed so much since its days under Soviet control. Tallinn once known as Reval was once the 2nd most important city in the Hanseatic League during the Middle Ages. This trading league was an important alliance of cities whose purpose was to protect trade in the Baltic Sea.
Much of the Lower Town architecture which is surrounded by a large city wall and protection towers is still intact or has been restored. The Upper Town where the nobles and wealthy live is called the Toompea. The people of Estonia look more similar to their Scandinavian neighbors and speak a language that is closer to Finnish or Swedish than Russian.
